Here are some pictures of a recent carrier service I did on a Bernina 1130. You can see the pins and lint in stuck in the machine where a normal service doesn't reach. Also, this machine had the old style feed block. That was replaced. This kind of service is good to do on Berninas from Models 1000 to 1630. It's not necessary every time, but, if you've never done it, you won't be sorry. The stuff that you see stuck in the feed mechanism is not accessible in a regular service.

I realize this is from a while ago, but the information is still very much relevant...I'm curious to know what the issue was with the old style drivers that causes them to require replacement and how to tell the difference between the old and the "new" versions.
Also, is this the reason why, after zeroing the forward/reverse feed, it doesn't hold the adjustment?
I've performed this both with the carrier removed and installed but the end results are the same; it will sew properly for a little while but once powered off and on again it's back out of balance.
